Calton Parkhead Church of Scotland Welcomes You to its Web Site

The Worship Sanctuary

The church sanctuary was opened for public worship in December 1935 to serve the newly built housing schemes of Newbank,Lilybank and Cuthelton in the Parkhead area of Glasgow, Scotland. The origin of the church dates back to 17 century and a chapel of ease provided for the folks of the Calton area of Glasgow. The Chapel of Ease, original meeting place for worship, was within Glasgow Cathedral itself but as the congregation grew it eventually established itself within the newly formed parish of Calton. A building for worship was erected in Tobago Street and was named Calton Parish church and remained in that location until 1935. The movement of folks from the Calton to the new housing in Parkhead (Newbank) established the church in its present site in Helenvale Street, Parkhead. The name of the church now retains its link to its long history and now serves the communities of Parkhead and Dalmarnock.

The Work and Witness of Calton Parkhead church today
The work and witness of the church is centred on its link with various community groups within the east end of Glasgow. The church buildings are used throughout the week by church and community groups. The mission work at Dalmarnock operates within the Dalmarnock Centre Community hall, Lily Street. A partnership agreement between Strathclyde Regional Council and the church of Scotland assured a place of the church in the witness work within the community centre itself.
